International Open Access Week 2025 (October 20–26) poses the question “Who Owns Our Knowledge?”.  OA Week is a time to celebrate progress in making research openly available and to spark conversations about the future of scholarly communication. This year, several Indiana universities are marking OA Week with special programming exploring how academic communities can reclaim control over the knowledge they produce. Below is a look at what’s happening at DePauw University, Indiana University Indianapolis, the University of Southern Indiana, and Indiana University Bloomington.

DePauw University will host a faculty roundtable titled “Who Owns Our Knowledge? The State of Open Access in the Liberal Arts” on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 11:30 a.m. in the Roy O. West Library. Led by librarian Victoria Peters, this session invites faculty to discuss the evolving landscape of scholarly communication and how open access models can empower liberal arts scholarship. By reflecting on DePauw’s own OA initiatives in the context of the broader movement, participants will explore the ethical implications of open scholarship and discover ways to increase the visibility and public impact of their research.

At Indiana University Indianapolis, the University Library is running a 5 Day Open Access Week Challenge, an asynchronous online event from Oct. 20–24. Participants who sign up will receive a short daily email guiding them through a tool or strategy for “community-first” open knowledge sharing. Each day’s 20-minute activity showcases a resource that helps researchers boost the visibility and reach of their work. This self-paced challenge empowers scholars to experiment with new ways of sharing knowledge openly.

The David L. Rice Library at the University of Southern Indiana is celebrating Open Access Week with a series of free webinars and an info table for the campus community. Throughout the week, librarians are hosting 30-minute lunchtime webinars (12:00–12:30 p.m.) on topics ranging from current scholarly publishing trends (Monday, Oct. 20) to modern open educational resources and library tools (Tuesday, Oct. 21) to creating your digital scholarly profile (Thursday, Oct. 23, covering tools like ORCiD and the SOAR institutional repository). On Wednesday, Oct. 22, an in-person Open Access information table will be set up at University Center West (11 a.m.–1 p.m.) to share resources, answer questions, and hand out OA-themed swag. For details and Zoom links, visit the library’s Open Access Week guide.

Indiana University Bloomington Libraries invite the campus to explore the theme “Who Owns (Y)our Knowledge? The Importance of University Publishing.” through a series of virtual panels and a keynote presentation. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, a panel of scholars and technologists will discuss emerging scholarly publishing infrastructures and how new platforms are challenging traditional publishing models. On Thursday, Oct. 23, another panel will examine the role of university-based publishing in creating more equitable and sustainable systems. The week culminates on Friday, Oct. 24 with a keynote address by Dr. Juan Pablo Alperin, who will highlight scholar-led open access initiatives around the world and how they are reshaping the future of academic publishing. All events are online and open to the IU community; see the IU Bloomington Libraries’ OA Week event page for the full schedule and registration details.
