Exploring the Library Analytics Landscape - November 2022

This webinar presentation featured Ken Varnum, Web Systems Manager, from the University Library at the University of Michigan. Ken works with library analytics projects at the University of Michigan and through IMLS grants.

The presentation and a related slide deck was made available to those who registered ahead of the Q&A session on Wednesday, November 9 from 3p to 4p ET. A zoom link to the Q&A session was provided. Questions were collected ahead of the Q&A.

The presentation is divided into 5 sections:

  1. Definitions – learning analytics and library analytics

  2. Library context for library analytics

  3. Information about the data – what data needs to be collected

  4. Tensions regarding library analytics – including patron privacy and other areas of concern

  5. Wrap up of topic

This is an exploratory talk, looking more at the kinds of library data that might lend themselves well to the broader campus learning analytics efforts in the context of what might lead to changes in library service models or campus teaching models. Ken also discusses how concerns about individual privacy are in tension with desires to assist the most at-need populations -- recognizing that the most at-need may well be the most at risk of data breaches.

What is Meescan? (

From the ground up, Meescan is designed as a cloud-based service and is fully network-managed. This unique self-checkout solution provides High Availability with very little local infrastructure. What does that mean for you? Meescan is easy for libraries to install and easy for patrons to use, and our equipment never requires on-site installation or repairs. Meescan offers you a comprehensive self-checkout solution for a fraction of the cost.

The backbone of the Meescan cloud is our distributed data centre with servers all across the world to provide a reliable, secure, and compliant service no matter where your library is located. All components of Meescan communicate with the cloud over secured data connections. Meescan architecture is built on High Availability standards with scaling, redundancy, and automated load balancing in place. All of our system components are monitored 24/7 and respond autonomously to unexpected events.

Rest assured that the Meescan cloud is always working hard so that your circulation desk staff don't have to.
